Abstract

Gaps in basic math knowledge are among the biggest obstacles to a successful start in university. Students starting their studies in STEM disciplines display a significant diversity, “Math anxiety” is a typical phenomenon and the transition to a self-determined way of studying is a huge challenge. This case study describes how the embedding of a math app can foster activation and self-regulated learning right from the start at university. The app approach shows a broad acceptance at Offenburg University of Applied Science, and due to its mobility, it can assist in learning settings that cannot be served by e-learning solutions that are optimized for PC or laptop usage. The app’s content for the transition from (high) school to university incorporates the cross-university COSH minimum requirement catalog for mathematics. Meanwhile more than 1000 students participated in the App based preparatory courses with a training package of 500 exercises.
