The short life cycles of technologies in the IT sector are forever challenging companies to educate their employees with regard to developments in a fast changing world. As a consequence, providers of educational services for this sector have to carefully analyze emerging topics and competencies in order to meet the demands of employers. To cope with this challenge, the University of Applied Sciences for Telecommunications in Leipzig, which is privately owned by Deutsche Telekom AG, has developed an innovative instrument to systematically analyze job advertisements which are publicly available on online job portals. This instrument, which is based on Text Mining methodology, is able to extract competency profiles for key professional profiles in the IT sector. This contribution presents results, which were gathered by analyzing more than 40.000 job advertisements for IT experts published in the period from June to September of 2012 and found on leading online job portals relating to the German labour market. The results provide detailed insights into the required competencies of consultants, software developers and analysts, which can be used to adapt education to the requirements of the labour market.Downloads
